The
History of Lubbock Power & Light
by Don Cullon
Retail
competition for electric customers. A novel concept? You would think so
judging by the way it is such a hot topic now among those in the electric
utility industry. As far as the citizens of Lubbock
are
concerned, the rest of the industry is lagging just a bit on this concept.
That is, if you consider a ‘bit’ to be around 90 years. Ninety years? Yes,
ninety years! For it was in 1916 that the good people of Lubbock laid the
foundation for retail competition by creating what would become Lubbock
Power & Light.
Lubbock was a
relatively new town at the time having been created in 1891 when two
smaller settlements both moved their towns from several miles away to our
present location. The fir st
county court house was built at this time with the county
itself having been created in 1876 by the Texas State Legislature.
Construction of the Panhandle & Santa Fe Railroad was completed in 1909
which led the
citizens to incorporate their town and thus Lubbock was officially born.
The population of Lubbock the following year had grown to 1,938.
