Electric switch: Xcel rate boost to give LP&L price edge
Council adopts rules for watering lawns

In a reversal of Lubbock's electric utility rates a year ago, Lubbock Power & Light soon will be the lowest-priced power provider in town, followed by rival Xcel Energy.

In another utility matter, Lubbock water customers will violate a city ordinance if they water their lawns between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., beginning May 1.

LP&L chairman Carroll McDonald said Thursday that when an Xcel rate hike takes effect May 1, the investor-owned utility will be $1.02 higher than city-owned LP&L for a base level of power.

Xcel will charge $78.73 for 1,000 kilowatt hours of typical residential usage, McDonald said, compared with $77.71 for the same amount of power from LP&L.
